- Buy only the amount of paint needed to do your work.
- Encourage the use of latex paint rather than alkyd paint.
- Before cleaning your brushes, use a roller and brush cleaner. - This type of tool has a serrated side to remove excess on a paint brushes and a concave side for paint rollers. This way you and retrieve a large amount of paint you can put in the container. In addition, the cleaning will require much less time and water thereafter.
- To clean your brushes coated with latex paint, finish cleaning in a tank of water instead of running water.
- If you must use an alkyd paint, let decant the solvent used to clean your brushes. The paint particles will pile up, allowing you to filter the solvent for future use.
- Do not spread paint residue on the ground, in sewers or drains, because they will contaminate streams and our groundwater.
- If the paint container is nearly empty, let the residues dry completely in the open container before disposal.
- Donate your leftover paint cans to anyone who needs it: neighbor, friend, recreational, non-profit organization. Make sure the liner is in its original container and the label is intact.
